The waste management project was started in late 2007 after realizing that if you want a clean environment then it's best to start something yourself and see what happens. As time has gone on the local municipality have taken an interest and now come every 2 weeks to collect the general waste. In 2008 the Mutale Municipality was voted the 'most improved municipality' this was partly due to the efforts of the project in Bennde-Mutale.

Also once a month we collect all the waste along the side of the road by the village. Once a year we try to get the children from the local primary school to collect rubbish in and around the village. Once they have done this then we organise a trip for them around the Northern part of the Kruger and to Punda Marie where there is an educational centre. Last year for 90% of the children it was the first time they had been into the Kruger and for most the first time to see, elephant, lion and buffalo.

We are also trying to do a recycling project with tin cans and glass, this is a major challenge, especially in the remote area we are based. Our biggest challenge is the economical viability of transporting the recyclable material. Recently the provincial government have started assessing all the different companies and NPO (Non-profit Organisations) and will hold work shops on the issue of recycling and general waste management.

We hope in the future to get our own bailing machine for the tin cans as this will ease many of the transportation problems for the cans.
